I was a quiet, angry child who felt I wasn’t cared about. When I worked out, I felt like I was fighting against something. I still haven’t figured out what it is.” –Claressa Shields
Move over, #Mayweather, this girl is on fire: Claressa “T-Rex” Shields is headed to the Brazil Olympics next year. She won gold in the London 2012 Olympics when she was only 17. Shields started boxing when she was 11.
Her dad was in and out of jail throughout her childhood. When he got out, he took her to a local boxing gym in Flint, Michigan.
He said boxing was for boys though.
She didn’t listen.
Her unique philosophy and strong sense of self render her too cool for the mainstream (she hasn’t gotten a single endorsement despite other gold medalists getting multi-million dollar deals). “I just want an endorsement. I would like to be on the cover of magazines but I’m not going to sell my body. I feel like I’m selling enough….I just continue to grow as a person, to grow as a fighter, and to keep going up the ladder because the ladder never stops.”
Before matches, her playlist includes #LilWayne and #Drake. Then she tunes on some gospel to chill before going into the ring.
