“I think you have to suffer a little so that you have something to say.”
Neshat is an Iranian photographer and filmmaker. She moved to Cali to study art at Berkeley and couldn’t return home because of the Iranian Revolution. She then moved to NYC, where she still lives (in#SoHo). During her 20s, she produced some art and then destroyed it. Years later, she visited Iran and was so moved by her experience, she created a series of photographs that examined femaleness within the context of Islamic fundamentalism.
Her work is complex and untethered, lending itself to ample interpretation: “Some thought I was endorsing the government. The government thought I was criticizing them. And the critics thought I was just being provocative.
She goes on long jogs with her dog and frequents the same restos in NYC and orders chicken fingers. She doesn’t leave the house without her iconic eyeliner.
