“We maniacs do outrageous things”

The youngest Oscar-winning recipient at the time (in 1963), Patty Duke went on to appear in her own show. During the years that followed her Oscar win, her personal life was characterized by heavy instability due to despicable treatment by her talent managers and undiagnosed bipolar disorder. She wouldn’t be diagnosed for another 20 years.

Following her diagnosis, she began dedicating her time to advocacy and education on mental health. Her activism led her to lobby US Congress to increase awareness, funding and research for those with mental illness.
