While we await a revised muslim ban this week, reportedly targeting fewer people to survive legal challenges, we have Ann Donnelly, a federal judge in the eastern district of New York, to thank for issuing the first challenge to the Trump administration. Amidst the protests, chaos, and confusion at airports just a day after Trump’s muslim ban went into effect, Ann began the judicial pushback against Trump and his EO when she granted an emergency stay. In it, she ordered that refugees and others detained at airports not be sent back to their home countries, as it would cause them “irreparable harm.”

Ann was nominated to the federal bench by Barack Obama on the recommendation of Chuck Schumer after working as a prosecutor for 25 years. Former colleagues describe her as having a “fairness to her core” and a “firm moral compass,” according to the Times. She has been serving as a federal judge since October of 2015.
